CHICAGO (AP) ? The short-handed Dallas Mavericks will sign 16-year veteran point guard Derek Fisher on Thursday, coach Rick Carlisle said after team's 101-78 loss to Chicago on Wednesday night.

The move is contingent on Fisher passing a physical.

Dallas played Wednesday without Darren Collison, who had started 14 of its first games at the point, because of a sprained right middle finger sustained Tuesday night in loss to Philadelphia.

"We need help at point guard," Carlisle said. "I found out on the way over here that Collison would be out, and we were fortunate to get (Jared) Cunningham active.

"We feel (Fisher) can help us. It's not a cure-all to all of our team challenges, but his expertise and experience will help."

Third-year guard Dominique Jones started for the second straight game at the position, getting 10 points and five assists in 24 minutes. Rodrigue Beaubois also saw time at the position.

The 38-year-old Fisher has won five titles, all with the Los Angeles Lakers, during his 16 NBA seasons. He played in all 20 of Oklahoma City's playoff games last season as the Thunder made the finals.

"We're just struggling a little bit right now," center Chris Kaman said. "Having Fisher come in tomorrow could help. Having a vet come in like that is great, who can help some of our young guys."

Fisher is a stout defender who has averaged 8.6 points over his career. He will rank fifth among all active players in games played when he takes the court for Dallas.

Fisher is the current president of the NBA Players Association and was a prominent figure in last season's lockout that limited the season to 66 games.

Dallas will have to release one of its current 15 players to make room for Fisher. The Mavericks (7-9) have played the entire season without star forward Dirk Nowitzki as the former NBA MVP recovers from right knee surgery.

White House 'Cliff' Offer to Boehner a 'Break from Reality'

Correction: The headline on a previous version of this article misattributed the partial quote "referenced. The quote came from a Republican aide.

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, on Thursday rejected a White House plan to avert the so-called fiscal cliff at year?s end that would generate nearly $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue over the next decade and require Republicans to allow Congress to relinquish its control over the nation?s statutory borrowing limits.?

?A complete break from reality,? is how the plan, delivered to Boehner and other congressional leaders by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at their Capitol offices, was described by a congressional Republican aide familiar with what was proposed. President Obama?s liaison to Congress, Rob Nabors, also was at the meetings.

At a news conference after the meeting, Boehner revealed no specifics of the White House plan, but said generally there had been ?no substantive progress? in talks over the past two weeks. He also accused the White House and Democrats of refusing to offer specific spending cuts.

The White House and congressional leaders are trying to prevent the combination of more than $500 billion in automatic tax hikes and spending cuts from taking place at the start of January. The impact is seen as potentially further damaging the nation?s fragile economy.

According to the congressional Republican source, what Geithner did offer Boehner and other congressional leaders is a plan that would instead call for $1.6 trillion in tax hikes ? all upfront ??in exchange for $400 billion in spending cuts later. The proposal also would extend the 2-percentage-point payroll-tax cut and allow as much as $50 billion in stimulus spending on infrastructure projects.

The only entitlement changes they proposed came from the president?s budget, said the aide, who emphasized the White House offer is not just unrealistic, but unbalanced.

"They also want a permanent, unlimited debt-limit increase ? for free," the aide added. That was a reference to a request that Congress give up its authority over federal borrowing to avoid another showdown over increasing the nation?s borrowing authority. The government is expected to hit the limit as early as next month.

?No additional cuts or reforms,? the aide said of the plan, though it would also boost spending to extend unemployment benefits and delay looming cuts to Medicare payments to doctors.

In averting the fiscal cliff, the plan would prevent the $109 billion in automatic sequesteratioin spending cuts set to kick in on Jan. 2.

But the aide complained: ?There were only seven weeks between Election Day and Christmas. The White House has now completely wasted three of them. After weeks of negotiations, they just demanded all of their favorite proposals, with no sign of compromise whatsoever.?

Still, House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California were optimistic that a deal could be reached by year's end.

?This doesn?t have to be a cliff-hanger,? said Pelosi, during a late afternoon news conference, after she and other top House Democrats met with Geithner.

Pelosi said she was confident that Republicans will come around and ?see the light? to freeze tax rates at current levels for a majority of Americans ? the ?middle-income tax cut? that would cover net personal incomes up to $250,000 ?? but let the lowered rates on income in excess of that amount expire as part of a broader, final deal. That is what the Senate already has already passed. The added revenue gained through the expiration of the high-end tax cuts is estimated to reach at least $800 billion, she said.

?This is a big down payment that we are suggesting and it opens the road to much more,? Pelosi said. ?In terms of what we do in terms of addressing strengthening entitlements, reforming the tax code, (and) making further cuts that we can do in the next Congress.?

House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen of Maryland echoed Pelosi, and said the optimism that Republicans might budge on their refusal to pass just the middle-class tax cut extension is based on comments from some Republicans themselves, such as Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, that tax rates should be frozen at the current levels for most of Americans in time for Christmas, and consider what to do about the 2 percent who see the rate on their excess income rise later.

Van Hollen said he thinks Boehner?s House Republican Conference is ?reading the tea leaves, they?re beginning to look into the future.? And like Cole, he said, more are recognizing that their insistence that the tax rates on portions of net incomes above the $250,000 threshold also should be frozen is an ?unsustainable position.?

Screen Shot 2012-11-30 at 12.48.17 AMWhatever it is it is palpable. A sort of buzz in the Valley that all is not well, and a slight nervousness among entrepreneurs, investors and startup employees as they flit about their day-to-day. We may not be in the middle of an outright private market collapse, but there will definitely be fewer tigers and monkeys at this year's holiday parties. The fingernail biting is not just caused by the Series A crunch, which has been happening for a year, although that is definitely a part of it ("20 percent of companies that have gotten a seed round in the last year will be able to raise a Series A" Sarah Lacy wrote on Wednesday, aptly comparing the current jostle for venture money to a game of musical chairs).

How climate change could affect entire forest ecosystems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? The fog comes in, and a drop of water forms on a pine needle, rolls down the needle, and falls to the forest floor. The process is repeated over and over, on each pine needle of every tree in a forest of Bishop pines on Santa Cruz Island, off the coast of Santa Barbara. That fog drip helps the entire forest ecosystem stay alive.

Thousands of years ago, in cooler and wetter times, Bishop pine trees are thought to have proliferated along the West Coast of the U.S. and Mexico. Now, stratus clouds -- the low-altitude clouds known locally as "June gloom" -- help keep the trees growing on Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, and on one island off Baja California. Other than these locations, Bishop pine trees grow only farther north in California where it is cooler and wetter.

Mariah S. Carbone, first author of a new paper, titled "Cloud Shading and Fog Drip Influence the Metabolism of a Coastal Pine Ecosystem," and her co-authors, studied the influence of clouds on the largest Bishop pine forest of Santa Cruz Island. Carbone is a postdoctoral fellow with UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS). Their study was published in the journal Global Change Biology.

"When people think about climate change, they're often thinking about temperature and precipitation," said Carbone. "When you think about precipitation, it's rain and snow, depending on where you are. What this study showed is that you can have really important water inputs coming from clouds that influence the carbon cycle."

She explained that clouds are one of the largest uncertainties in global climate, and that the forest ecosystem interactions with clouds have a large impact -- one that has rarely been studied before, particularly in Southern California.

Changes in cloudiness or cloud height with global warming will alter the types of forest ecosystems that grow in coastal California, explained Carbone. While predictions about how rainfall will change in California over the next 50 years are uncertain, fog and low-stratus clouds might decline as sea-surface temperatures warm. Like the relict Bishop pines on Santa Cruz Island, and the majestic coastal Redwood forests in Northern California, forests remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, and thus are important for understanding greenhouse gas concentrations in the future. These coastal forests are also highly valued for their aesthetic and recreation qualities.

Fog is often present in coastal California during May through August. It occurs when the land warms in the spring and summer, and moist ocean air is pulled over cold, upwelling coastal waters. This moist air then condenses under a stable atmospheric inversion layer, creating low clouds or fog banks.

"The finding that summer fog strongly impacts carbon cycling highlights the need for improved understanding of whether we should expect coastal summer cloud behavior to change in a warmer world," said second author A. Park Williams, a former graduate student in UCSB's Geography Department, now at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "A change in summer fogginess could produce temperature, moisture, and carbon feedbacks in coastal ecosystems that easily swamp out the effects expected from increased greenhouse gases alone," said Williams.

The carbon cycle involves the movement of billions of tons of carbon between the oceans, lands, and atmosphere every year. Increased amounts of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, ??are injected into the atmosphere and contribute to climate change.

The scientists received help from NASA and NOAA in collecting information. "We used satellite data to map the spatial distribution of cloud cover across the western portion of Santa Cruz Island," said senior author Christopher J. Still, formerly an associate professor at UC Santa Barbara, now at Oregon State University. "We had some evidence of a cloud cover gradient from the coast to inland, based on our own observations and our weather station data, but the satellite data -- from NOAA and NASA satellites -- really allowed us to quantify this gradient across the western half of the island and in particular at our two study sites," said Still.

Still said that the authors believe this study is unique in linking clouds to soil microbial activity. "While most previous research on fog and ecosystems has focused on its role in plant-water relations -- such as the well-known linkages between fog and coast Redwoods -- we show that soil microbial activity and metabolism in these coastal ecosystems may be very dependent on the light but frequent fog drip that occurs during the rainless summer months," said Still. The study is also unique in linking fog and low clouds to the carbon cycle of a coastal ecosystem, including its impact on tree growth and soil respiration.

"What we found was that there are two major effects of the clouds," said Carbone. "One is shading, which keeps the temperatures cooler and the soil moisture higher. The other is fog drip, which is a water input into the soil."

The soil moisture content was not depleted as rapidly where the trees were under more cloud cover, and thus they were able to grow longer into the dry season. Water pulses from fog drip immediately stimulated microbes in the litter and soil below, but did not directly enhance pine tree activity. The microbial activity releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"This study provides us with a greater understanding of how fog and the low coastal clouds which Californians commonly call 'the marine layer' affect plant growth and the activities of microorganisms in the soil," said John Randall, scientist with The Nature Conservancy, which owns and operates Santa Cruz Island in cooperation with the National Park Service and the University of California. "Their findings of the importance of fog and low clouds in influencing plant growth and survival and microbial metabolism in the soil will help us understand how changes in coastal fogs and low clouds that may accompany climate change will affect the forests and soils on Santa Cruz Island, other islands off the coast of California and Mexico, and all along the coast of the adjacent mainland."

The work on Santa Cruz Island, conducted in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, was funded by grants from the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Kearney Foundation of Soil Science. The NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis have supported Carbone.

Self Improvement | Daily Positive Affirmations for Success ...

Posted On: Tue, November 27th, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views 7 | Word Count: 606

What is success?

Human living, ever since evolution has transformed into complex societies through centuries, thereby making the human mind still more complex. Career, earnings and success are part of human living. No human life is possible without an effort to earn a living. This is where success comes to play a big role in our lives. Success is the abstract and objective result of an effort or purpose to accomplish or attain a sustainable living through a plan of human action. Success is a relative term and it varies from person to person in wealth, fame and social status etc.??

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are assertive statements to the subconscious mind to influence speech, behavior, attitude, actions and reactions. They help build up will power. This will power is achieved through self discipline and by nurturing sustainable actions. Positive mindset which is the most powerful life strategy is the basis to attain the required will power. Applying the law of attraction influence mental vibrations for creating positive thoughts and positive vision to achieve the set goals. If you think positively that you can achieve something - you can do it and this is an affirmation to set your path right. All positive adjectives or words or statements are affirmations to your ?self? to trigger the subconscious mind to plunge into positive actions. Success stories are also affirmations to serve as a beacon light to show the direction and help guide you on the path to success.

Why are affirmations required for success?

Human mind never ceases to function as long the human body is alive and it keeps reacting to every physical and mental feeling. It is here that self affirmations help condition the subconscious mind to develop positive perceptions of your ?self?. These self affirmations not only keep all harmful thinking and behavior not to get registered in the mind but they also help undo any damage caused by negative scripts or perceptions. Positive attributes namely, your best qualities, abilities, drive, dynamism and decision making are some of the important affirmations for success and to keep you always strong and steadfast.

How to use affirmations for success?

Successes are an essential aspect of our lives for achieving well being and earn a respectable living. There is no short cut to success. It comes with hard work, commitment, vision and direction. Affirmations truly motivate the morale in you and lead you to success, step by step. You think about your strengths and weakness and while doing so you have to be truly honest, as any falsehood in them would only weaken your self-confidence. Pretence cannot pull any wool over others eyes not to see your weaknesses. Then you have to draw a map of direction duly prioritizing the list of things to work on to reach the goal. Write down all positive attributes and keep a self check on them. You have to maintain a cool temperament in public relations and avoid sending wrong signals to adjudge you as a negative character. The best way to behave in public life is to wear a smile on your face even when encountering an adversary.

Conclusion:

?Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.?? Abraham Lincoln

If you are determined to achieve a set goal, no potholes or bottlenecks can stop you. All you have to do is to find ways to overcome them. Disillusionment or discouragement should never enter even in the subconscious mind. And, when they are forced on you, use all your positive affirmations and get rejuvenated. After all ?Success is nothing but getting up one more time after you fall?. ?

EPA strengthens water quality guidelines for beaches

WASHINGTON ? The Environmental Protection Agency updated water quality guidelines for the nation's beaches Monday, moving in response to charges that the federal government has not done enough to protect bathers from polluted water.

The new guidelines, which update standards issued in 1986, may not immediately mean safer beaches and coastal waters. States have the authority to set their own water quality standards.

But federal environmental officials said they hoped the suggested guidance would prompt state leaders to toughen their own oversight of recreational waters where people swim, surf and go boating. California is among the states that may tighten standards.

One set of new guidelines parallels recommendations issued 26 years ago for acceptable concentrations of Enterococci and E. coli bacteria, which can cause serious illnesses if ingested.

The EPA also issued a second set of standards with lower recommended thresholds for both bacteria.

The tougher guidelines are expected to keep illnesses down to 32 per 1,000 people, compared with 36 illnesses for the lower standard, the agency said.

The EPA also recommended a more aggressive testing schedule to monitor water quality at beaches.

Ellen Gilinsky, senior policy advisor in the EPA Office of Water, said the agency made the move after reviewing new research on water quality.

"We felt it was appropriate to strengthen our recommendations," she said.

The decision to issue two sets of guidelines drew a mixed response from the Natural Resources Defense Council, which was among a group of organizations that sued in federal court in California to force the EPA to update its water quality standards.

"It's an odd approach," said Steve Fleischli, the council's director of water programs.

Fleischli said the two standards could perpetuate inconsistencies between states that adopt the tougher guidelines and those that opt for the more lenient ones.

Other parties to the lawsuit include the National Assn. of Clean Water Agencies and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District.

GOP senators more troubled after Rice meeting

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three Republican senators said Tuesday they are more troubled than ever with comments made days after the deadly Sept. 11 raid in Libya by Susan Rice, the U.N. ambassador and President Barack Obama's possible choice for secretary of state.

Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte met privately with Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell for more than an hour on her much-maligned explanations of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Rice told the lawmakers that the initial assessment of the cause of the attack five days later was wrong.

"The talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: There was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi," Rice said in a statement after the meeting. "While we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case the intelligence assessment has evolved."

She insisted that there was no intention to mislead the American people, and the administration updated Congress as the assessment evolved. The senators, though, were not mollified.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate and the tragic death of four brave Americans and whether Ambassador Rice was prepared, or informed sufficiently, to give the American people the correct depiction of the events that took place," McCain told reporters.

Said Graham: "Bottom line I'm more disturbed now than I was before that 16 September explanation."

The three insisted that they need more information about the Libyan raid before they even consider Rice as a possible replacement for Clinton.

"I'm more troubled today," said Ayotte, who argued that it was clear in the days after the attack that it was terrorism and not a spontaneous demonstration prompted by an anti-Muslim video.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said there were "no unanswered questions about Rice's appearance on the Sunday shows and the talking points that she used that were provided by the intelligence community. Those questions have been answered."

Carney called the focus on Rice's appearance on the Sunday shows an "obsession."

Despite lingering questions over her public comments after the Benghazi attack, Rice has emerged as the front-runner on a short list of candidates to succeed Clinton, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., seen as her closest alternative.

The strong statements from the three senators clouded Rice's prospects only two days after Republican opposition seem to be softening. Rice planned meetings on Wednesday with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Corker said Tuesday that he had concerns with a possible nomination.

"When I hear Susan talk she seems to me like she'd be a great chairman of the Democratic National Committee," Corker said. "There is nobody who is more staff supportive of what the administration does. That concerns me in a secretary of state."

Rice's series of meetings on Capitol Hill will be a critical test both for Republicans, who will decide whether they can support her, and the administration, which must gauge whether Rice has enough support to merit a nomination.

A senior Senate aide said the administration was sounding out moderate members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, such as Corker and Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. Assessing the prospects for Rice before Obama makes any announcement would avoid the embarrassment of a protracted fight with the Senate early in the president's second term and the possible failure of the nominee.

On talk shows the weekend following the attack, which took place on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Rice was given talking points that described the attack as a spontaneous protest of the film, even though the Obama administration had known for days that it was a militant assault.

Republicans called her nomination doomed, leading to a vigorous defense of her by Obama in his first postelection news conference. Since then, GOP lawmakers have appeared to soften their views. McCain, who said earlier this month that would he do everything in his power to scuttle a Rice nomination, said Sunday that he was willing to hear Rice out before making a decision.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had issued a statement highly critical of Rice on the day of Obama's news conference. He indicated Monday that perhaps she didn't know what had transpired in Benghazi on the day of the attack.

"I assumed she had full knowledge of everything that went on. I'm not at all convinced of that now. She very well could have been thrown under the bus," Inhofe said in an interview. He said she hadn't requested a meeting but he would be glad to meet with her.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that the administration appreciated McCain's latest comments about Rice, but wouldn't say whether the president saw them as an opening to make the nomination. "Ambassador Rice has done an excellent job at the United Nations and is highly qualified for any number of positions," Carney said.

Several diplomats currently serving with Rice said that what she lacked in Clinton's star power, she could make up with a blunter approach that demands attention and has marked her tenure thus far at the United Nations.

Rice, who at 48 is relatively young, has been known to covet the job for years, but was passed over for Clinton in 2009.

When abundant classroom time is adherent to answer the stages of the autograph action and the accent of brainstorming, acceptance feel added assured to address a paragraph, let abandoned a paper, which generally makes them feel uneasy.

Brainstorming Techniques

Brainstorming is apparently the a lot of able of all the autograph techniques because it helps ESL acceptance anticipate through their capacity afterwards accepting them adjudicator what they write. With brainstorming, acceptance artlessly address items up, one afterwards another, afterwards annoying about putting them in any appropriate order. Animate acceptance to accrue as abounding data as they can anticipate of.

Other Pre-writing Strategies

Another pre-writing action agents can use with their ESL acceptance is freewriting. For instance, you can acquaint them to address whatever comes into their mind. Acquaint them to address for ten account on affair X afterwards endlessly and annoying about spelling, grammar and the like, which is generally actual harder for them to do at first. Explain to them that autograph is aswell addition out what you wish to say, which should accept all of their absorption at this aboriginal date of the autograph process.

Another prewriting address which is appropriately acknowledged is analytic application words such as: what, when, where, why, and how. You can alpha the autograph assignment by answer to your acceptance that analytic agency breeding data about their affair by autograph a alternation of questions and answers about it.

After acceptance freewrite, ask them to accomplish up a account of details. This helps them with allocation after on their advice and how they wish to align their paragraphs. One detail generally leads to addition as acceptance aggrandize their list. Slowly but surely, they are afraid to acquisition added acknowledging actual arising that they can use to advance their papers. By the time they accept accomplished their list, they are accessible to plan an outline of their paragraphs and to address their aboriginal drafts.

In short, prewriting stategies should act as aplomb builders which ESL acceptance can use as they activate to address about their capacity and plan their thoughts. Always animate your acceptance to attending for a point they can make, and accomplish abiding they accept abundant data to abutment it.

    Genocide of the Imaginary Friend

While many psychologists found that children with imaginary friends often have a good development, adults who have imaginary friends, a spiritual second personality or a trusted voice in their head are seen as ill and sometimes even as dangerous even though the imaginary friends are seldomly a bad influence. I personally share my mind with a friend who is similar in personality to me but less shy. Psychologists have tried to get rid of her and I had to hide her. I see it as a genocide of imaginary friends when psychologists want to get rid of them since they view them as a psychosis. The psychologists are the nazis and the imaginary friends are the jews and as long as psychologists do not change their approach, we would keep protecting our imaginary friends.

Do you have an imaginary friend and have psychologists tried to get rid of him/her/it? Or is your psychologist rather a Schindler?

Special Education teachers are an aging population: Local schools ...

California is currently facing as shortage of qualified teachers ? including special education teachers ? according to an article printed in September on US News on NBCNews.com.

The article cited a report, ?Greatness by Design? released by the California Department of Education in September ? a report designed to help improve how teachers are recruited, trained and mentored ? that states ?there are still shortages of qualified teachers in fields such as special education.?

Dr. Pia Wong, department chair for the Department of Teaching Credentials and professor at California State University Sacramento, says one reason for the shortage is teachers retiring without anyone to fill their positions. ?When you look at the average age of teachers in special (education) and general education, it?s an aging population,? she explains. ?Based on when people typically do retire or can retire, we know in the next 10 years we?re going to see very high numbers of retirement.?

Another reason, says Dr. Wong, is a growth in the population of students who qualify for special education services due to better diagnostic processes. ?Because we have better tools for understanding the special needs that students have, there?s more students that are identified and therefore that creates a need for special programs, special classes, specialized teachers,? she says.

So what does this mean for Sacramento?

    Inclusion Practice at SCUSD

In Sacramento City Unified School District, Director of Special Education Becky Bryant says there?s not a shortage of special education teachers overall, but there is a shortage in certain types of special education specialties, such as speech and language pathologists and occupational therapists.

Overall, Bryant says the amount of special education teachers they have is cyclical and will depend on the number of retirees they have each year and if there are new teachers coming to replace them. ?Because Sacramento is the capitol, we have a lot of people that kind of move in and out because they have to relocate or something,? she adds.

According to Bryant, SCUSD employs 260 special education teachers and serves 88 schools plus charter schools. She says there are resource specialist programs at all school sites, and throughout the district there are special day programs.

Bryant says SCUSD is in the third year of implementation of an Inclusive Practice program at six schools in the district ? C.K. McClatchy High School, California Middle School, Sutterville Elementary, Oak Ridge Elementary, Leataata Floyd Elementary, and Caleb Greenwood K-8 School. Through this model, says Bryant, students who would have been in a traditional special day class setting are now in general education, and the general educator and special education teacher co-teach together to provide instruction to all students in the classroom.

According to Bryant, Inclusive Practice helps teach students skills they will need when they become adults and enter into a diverse society, and it allows all students to learn together and be part of a community. ?It?s not about singling out students with disabilities and sending them somewhere else,? she adds.

Special Programs & Inclusion at SJUSD

Over at San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD), Dayle Cantrall, program manager for special education, believes that special education is a growing need because there is not always a pool of credentialed teachers at the ready to fill any holes they may have. ?When we have credentialed teachers, they usually end up in a job and they stay ? they don?t face layoffs like general education teachers do, they?re always in high demand,? she adds.

According to Cantrall, SJUSD currently employs 307 special education teachers, including speech therapists and adaptive PE teachers. She says there is at a minimum a half-time resource teacher at every school site, and some high schools have upwards to nine special education teachers at a school site. And special education students range from those that need speech therapy to specialized programs for severe autism and the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Cantrall says recent changes in special education programs at SJUSD include specialized programming for severe autism students and a new transition center for kids ages 18-22 this year.

Additionally, there are specialized inclusion programs from elementary through high school on a few campuses in the district, says Cantrall. ?We have support built into the particular campuses, including increased number of instructional assistants,? she explains. Plus some campuses also have the capability for a special education student to attend the same school as their brothers and sisters through the support of ?roving inclusion teachers? and resources teachers.

    What It Takes

To help ensure there are qualified special education teachers for California schools, Dr. Wong says one thing CSUS has done is advocate for an admission cycle for the special education credential program every semester. Additionally, faculty has been active in securing grants from the federal government to help candidates interested in pursuing the special education credential.

For those considering becoming certified to become a special education teacher, Dr. Wong suggests they look into it by doing some research and visiting some classrooms. ?I think people may have certain preconceptions about what it means to teach students with special needs,? she explains. ?I think if they were to visit some classrooms, they would really see some positive, exciting things happen and maybe find it?s something that attracts them.?

Bryant says they look to hire special education teachers who have a passion for kids in general, and a passion to work with students with disabilities. ?(We look for) people who have a clear understanding of how to manage a classroom, how to motivate kids, and who are really willing to work on creating relationships with kids,? she adds.

And Cantrall says if you have a calling to work with at-risk kids, you?re not afraid to collaborate, think outside the box, and do what?s needed to meet the best interests of that child?s needs ? go for it. ?We need people in special education who are not only dedicated to kids, but dedicated to paving the way so those kids can continue to learn in the least restrictive environment possible,? she says.

Florida woman arrested for riding an endangered manatee

(Reuters) - A Florida woman photographed two months ago riding an endangered manatee in violation of state law was arrested on Saturday on misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's office said deputies arrested Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53, without incident at her job at a Sears store in St. Petersburg on a warrant for violating the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act.

The state makes it illegal to "annoy, molest, harass or disturb" the endangered aquatic mammals, whose survival is imperiled by manmade threats, including boating collisions. Violations are considered a second-degree misdemeanor.

The arrest stemmed from reports on September 30 that an unidentified woman had been seen touching and riding a manatee - which can grow up to 12 feet in length and weigh up to 1,800 pounds (818 kilograms) - at Fort Desoto Park, a few miles from downtown St. Petersburg.

Following media coverage of her cavorting with the mammal, Garcia Gutierrez called the sheriff's office two days later to turn herself in.

She admitted the offense claiming "she is new to the area and did not realize it was against the law to touch or harass manatees," the office said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear what penalties Garcia Gutierrez would face if convicted.

Black Friday "Thrill Of The Hunt" Online - Business Insider

    Videos and horror stories are

beginning to show that this year's Black Friday shopping frenzies are no different than usual Black Friday shopping frenzies.

In this one clip, for example, a herd of Walmart shoppers attacks a display case and each other. The only thing that makes this scene different than the brainless zombie attacks in Walking Dead is that the live humans in Walmart move faster and more aggressively.

If there's any activity that better illustrates human herd psychology better than this annual ritual, we don't know what it is.

We're tempted to paint the behavior as a metaphor for one of the deep sicknesses of this country?the shopping and consumption addiction. The horrors of greed. The death of manners. The lack of humanity. Etc.

But everyone already knows about all those things, and yet Black Friday just seems to get more frenzied every year.

So, instead, we'll take the opportunity to ask a question:

Why don't more online retailers take advantage of this herd psychology?

According to a Kmart boss quoted yesterday, what turns normal people into brainless mobs on Black Friday is not getting a deal, particularly, but the "thrill of the hunt."

In other words, the feeling that, through perseverance, cunning, and effort, you have beaten other consumers and bagged a coveted prize.

So, why can't e-commerce companies take advantage of that?

Why can't Amazon, for example, create a sense of a "hunt" on the site on Black Friday?selling a limited number of items at some insane price, and only to customers who get there first. It was this "gamification" of shopping, after all, that drove much of eBay's early success, as well as the success of flash sales companies like Gilt Groupe. And it's what drives the "preorder" frenzy for every Apple product launch.

The truth, of course, is that shopping in the physical world on Black Friday is a nightmare.

Shopping from your couch, meanwhile, is extraordinarily pleasant.

So if Amazon, et al., could find some way to translate the "thrill of the hunt" to e-commerce, they would not just generate some additional buzz for themselves. They would help make the world better for everyone, physical-world and e-commerce shoppers alike.

Powerful gas explosion levels Mass. buildings; several hurt

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? A natural gas explosion in one of New England's biggest cities on Friday destroyed two buildings, including one housing a strip club, and damaged others beyond repair but didn't kill anyone, authorities said.

"This is a miracle on Worthington Street that no one was killed," Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said at a press conference.

Firefighters, police officers and gas company workers in the area because of an earlier gas leak and odor report were among more than a dozen injured people, authorities said.

The explosion in a downtown area of Springfield, 90 miles west of Boston, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, leaving three more buildings irreparably damaged and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.

Police Sgt. John Delaney marveled at the destruction at the blast's epicenter, where a multistory building was leveled.

"It looks like there was a missile strike here," he said.

Officials at two nearby hospitals said a total of 16 victims were transported there with injuries but none was critical.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. and were investigating the gas leak when the blast happened shortly after 5 p.m. The cause of the explosion hadn't been identified but was under investigation, they said.

Springfield, which has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not in the vicinity of the blast.

The explosion, in an area of downtown Springfield with commercial properties and residences, destroyed a building that housed a Scores Gentlemen's Club.

Area resident Wayne Davis said he felt his apartment building shake a block away.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard for miles around. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.

Mayor Domenic Sarno said it was through "God's mercy" that nobody had been reported killed in the explosion.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the individuals that have been injured and the people who have been displaced," he said, adding that emergency shelter was being set up for those unable to go home.

Riverside Turbo to build on fresh success to land Dobbins - Bettor

Riverside Turbo to build on fresh success to land Dobbins @ Shelbourne A1 525 at Shelbourne Park

Riverside Turbo?s major competitors in Wednesday?s Dobbins @ Shelbourne A1 525 at Shelbourne Park are completely out-of-form. So, the black dog should not face any difficultly in claiming the top prize.

According to the betting forecast, Dusseldorf is enjoying the best odds, followed by Robbiesgoneagain. The former of the two made a fine solo outing a few days ago, but his race form is very bad these days.

After collecting plenty of embarrassment here in early September, he went to Cork, but found nothing good. On his previous two outing, Gilbert?s charge was fourth on the table.

Having faced a lot of mess lately, it is surely an uphill task for him to bounce back. There is no doubt over his talent though. We advised the bettors not to trust him blindly.

Robbiesgoneagain, who is carrying the second best price, is also not in winning momentum. The black dog did nothing special on his previous few rides. In a similar event at the start of this month, he could only beat the back marker. The latest trip saw him finishing third behind Kilgrogan Nicked. The son of Hondo Black also needs an extra push to get back to the right track.

In this situation, Riverside Turbo looks the most trustworthy. The black dog, trained by G. Holland, recently returned to form with a fantastic 1?-length triumph. He made several unlucky rides ahead of the latest glory.

The success must have booted up his confidence, which he will surely use today. The way he performed last time makes him the best betting option in today?s crucial meeting.

Besides the aforementioned trio, no one is likely to make a huge impact. Fast Fit Henry showed some improvement on his return to Shelbourne Park, when finishing second to Swords Star. Despite having the draw in favour, he is facing a stiff task.

Jaxx Party Time won two short-distance races lately, but her reliability over this trip is questionable. Rathbawn Tommy is running well without having much success these days. He is likely to continue in the same fashion. The ?250 event is due to get underway at 21:35 GMT.

Maine TV news co-anchors quit on the air

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? Two news co-anchors for a Maine television station surprised viewers and colleagues by quitting on the air, later citing frustration with their management.

Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio announced their resignations at the end of Tuesday's 6 p.m. newscast on WVII.

The two didn't give specific reasons on the air for their sudden departure. Consiglio said that while they enjoyed reporting the news, "some recent developments have come to our attention, though, and departing together is the best alternative we can take."

Michaels said she and Consiglio were "are very sorry for having to say goodbye for now, but we'll still be around." She plans to pursue a writing career and paint, and Consiglio said he would continue his career "in a different capacity."

Their boss said Wednesday they had been on their way out the door anyway. He said he was not surprised by the action they took.

"Sometimes people leave before they're officially told to leave," said Mike Palmer, station vice president and general manager. He declined to discuss issues that may have caused disagreements but said, "There are things that they know."

Michaels, who was the station's news director, said in an email to The Associated Press that there was "a regular un-doing of decisions made by me." She also questioned the station's treatment of political stories and said it did not consider news programming important enough.

WVII and another station Palmer manages, Fox affiliate WFVX, have made headlines before. In 2006, The New York Times reported that Palmer prohibited further stories on global warming after the stations reported from a movie theater where Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was opening.

Michaels wrote she had "no clue" she was going to be let go.

She and Consiglio, she wrote, "were Bangor's longest running news team with more than six years on the news together. We wanted to be able to say a thoughtful, heart-felt good-bye to our viewers and to the many communities we served over the years. We did not defame the company in any way over the air. The goodbye was cordial, sincere and done with integrity."
