7 Yoga Poses to Help You Sleep | Care2 Healthy Living

It?s 12:00 midnight?you?ve put the finishing touches on tomorrow?s presentation, done some much-needed laundry, and put the kids to bed (though how long they?ll actually stay in bed is anyone?s guess). You retreat underneath the covers, eager to capture a few hours of shut-eye.

The problem is, your eyes?and your brain?refuse to close.

Sound familiar?

The occasional sleepless night, while annoying, is no big deal. Chronic insomnia however, can pose a serious threat to your health and wellbeing.

Can yoga help you snag extra sleep?

One way you may be able to snatch some extra shut-eye is by adopting a nightly yoga routine.

Harvard University researchers recently discovered that a regular yoga practice helped people fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and improved the overall quality of their rest.

Previous studies have also linked the ancient form of exercise to improvements in sleep efficiency for post-menopausal women, cancer survivors and those suffering from osteoarthritis.

According to Brent Brandow, director of operations at Parkway SleepHealth Centers, using yoga to lose weight and learning proper breathing patterns can be particularly helpful for those suffering from weight-induced sleep apnea?a condition where a person experiences abnormal pauses in breathing while sleeping?perhaps even allowing them to be weaned off of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines.

These findings come as no surprise to long-time yoga devotees.

?Yoga facilitates sleep by relaxing both your mind and body,? says Rina Jacubowicz, yoga instructor and founder of Rina Yoga, ?It forces you to be present, slowing down all the worries that collect throughout the day.?

Yoga also helps improve body alignment and flexibility, two things that contribute to physical aches and pains that may rob you of precious rest time.

Just breathe

Yoga goes beyond just bending and twisting. Breathing techniques play an essential role in grounding the body and opening the mind.

Jacubowicz describes ?belly breathing,? a respiration method people often use to relax and rejuvenate while practicing yoga:

Stand up or lie down, whichever you prefer. Just be sure to keep your spine long.

Put one hand on your belly and inhale, expanding your belly like a balloon.

When you exhale, pull your belly button in towards your spine.

Repeat this for at least ten deep breaths (you can definitely do more if you want to). Each time you inhale, try to relax and inflate your belly as much as you can.

(AP) ? Blue Jays President Paul Beeston couldn't believe it when he learned the Blue Jays had the chance to land three star players from the Miami Marlins last week. He was equally surprised when his general manager told him he wanted to hire John Gibbons to manage the Blue Jays again.

"They were back-to-back shockers," Beeston said with a laugh.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos unexpectedly hired Gibbons as his new manager on Tuesday, a day after a megadeal with the Miami Marlins reinvigorated the roster and raised expectations the Blue Jays will make the playoffs for the first time since winning their second consecutive World Series in 1993. Only Kansas City and Pittsburgh have longer playoff droughts.

"I said 'Are you serious?'" Beeston recalled. "Forget about him being an intellectual, he's a baseball guy. And those are the guys you really want in your organization."

Gibbons managed Toronto 2004-08 and had a 305-305 record, making him the third-winningest manager in franchise history.

He succeeds John Farrell, who spurned Toronto for his dream managing job in Boston. Gibbons takes over a very different team from the one Farrell managed.

The surprise announcement came a day after the Blue Jays completed the trade to acquire All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle from Miami. Toronto agreed to the trade last week and Commissioner Bud Selig approved it Monday. The Blue Jays, extraordinarily busy in this offseason, also finalized a $16 million, two-year contract with free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Gibbons said he never imagined he'd be hired by Toronto again.

"Who wouldn't want to be here?" Gibbons said. "The front office has put together a legitimate contending-type team."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is well aware the AL East has gotten even more competitive because of Toronto's recent moves.

"I know the sleeping giant that exists up there. It's a great baseball town," Cashman said in a conference call with New York beat writers. "Last year wasn't a true reflection of how good they could have been because they got derailed with injuries and unexpected underperformance."

Anthopoulos said he wanted someone he was familiar with. Anthopoulos was an assistant GM when Gibbons managed Toronto. Gibbons joins Cito Gaston as managers serving two stints with the Blue Jays.

"I don't know that there was anybody better in terms of managing a bullpen, connecting with the players, connecting with the front office, holding players accountable," Anthopoulos said.

His best season was in 2006, when Toronto went 87-75 to finish second in the division ? the same season he had a well-publicized blowup with players Shea Hillenbrand Ted Lilly. Gibbons said he regrets the physical altercation with Hillenbrand and called it a black eye, but Anthopoulos defended him and said if you can't play for Gibbons then you can't play for too many guys.

Gibbons most recently managed the San Antonio Missions of the Double-A Texas League in the San Diego Padres' organization last season. He also had three seasons as the Kansas City Royals' bench coach.

Gibbons joined the Blue Jays' coaching staff in 2002 as a bullpen catcher and was promoted midseason to first base coach. He served in that capacity until replacing Carlos Tosca in 2004. Before joining the Blue Jays the first time, Gibbons spent 11 seasons working with the New York Mets.

Anthopoulos said the Blue Jays have gone beyond what they thought the payroll could be, but said he was promised that if the right opportunity came along ownership would spend. The payroll stands at $120 million as of now.

Anthopoulos said he didn't expect to make such a splash this offseason. He said he first targeted Johnson and but quickly learned Reyes and Buehrle were also available. He told Beeston he knew it was a lot of money, but said Beeston encouraged him and checked with the owners, Rogers Communications.

"I always felt when the opportunity was right that Rogers would invest in the ballclub," Beeston said. "We've spent the money, now let's go out and win."

Stop the Parade!

For Americans, the fourth Thursday in November can mean lots of things, usually some combination of food, family, and football. But before all that, there?s the Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade.* The three-hour, 80-plus-year tradition starts at 9 a.m. and boasts 16 gigantic balloons. If you are ambitious and want to brave the cold on the night before, you can watch those balloons get inflated. In addition to seeing Kermit the Frog or Spider-Man, you?ll also witness the squandering of the global supply of helium.

At projected rates of consumption, all the currently available helium on Earth will be depleted in about 40 years. While its best-known use may be filling balloons and making people who inhale it squeak like Mickey Mouse, the element?s scientific uses are arguably more valuable. No other gas is as light without being combustible. Those properties, as well as its very low boiling point and high thermal conductivity, make it indispensable for aerospace engineering, deep-sea diving, and cryogenics. So, while a world with no more balloons is a sad specter, without liquefied helium we wouldn?t be able to make superconducting magnets like those in MRIs.

The sorry state of our helium reserves can be traced to three key factors. Thanks to a 1996 act of Congress, the price of helium is artificially low, so there?s little deterrence for overuse. There?s also the fact that we have no idea how to artificially produce helium in any real, sustainable way. Finally, helium?s unique properties make finding a viable substitute almost impossible.

The helium we use today is found in underground gas pockets, often associated with natural gas. Helium is abundant in the universe, but here on Earth it is more elusive; while there?s a lot of helium in the atmosphere, it is very difficult to purify. It?s really only when it is trapped underground that we can isolate it. This helium is largely formed as a by-product of decaying radioactive elements. The rate at which it is produced accounts for less than one-half of global demand, and most of it cannot be recovered efficiently.

Producing helium artificially is possible in theory, but only through fission or nuclear fusion of two hydrogen atoms. Fission is impractical because enormous quantities of heavy metals like uranium and thorium would be necessary, and fusion won't work because of the high energies required to combine hydrogen atoms to form helium. Commercial fusion energy is the goal of much research around the globe but is very far from being a reality. (The New York Times recently questioned the DOE?s investment in fusion research.) Even if fusion ever reliably produced more energy than is required to start the reaction, the industry would not take off for many decades, and the amount of helium produced would be marginal.

While helium can be replaced for some applications, in cryogenics there aren?t any alternatives. As a result, nearly 6.4 billion cubic feet of helium are consumed globally per year out of a slowly dwindling supply of 1.87 trillion cubic feet. If the rate of helium consumption grows at 4 percent per year (as the National Academy of Sciences projects) the helium currently available, plus that estimated to be untapped underground, could all be lost to the atmosphere in 65 years. Once helium is released into the atmosphere?as when balloons are deflated?it becomes almost prohibitively expensive to retrieve and purify. The lower the helium content a gas has, the more expensive it is to separate out. No one knows exactly how much it would cost to purify it from the air, but Nobel Prize-winning Cornell physicist Robert Richardson (co-chair of the 2010 NAS report) estimates it may make the price of helium 10,000 times what it is now.

Of course, there are those that think the helium panic is overblown. Some estimates claim the global supply of helium will last at least another 300 years. As helium becomes more scarce and expensive to purify, recycling will become more widespread, but recycling is possible for only certain applications.

The source of the helium we use now was discovered in 1903 in Dexter, Kan., when drillers happened upon gas that didn?t burn. They were disappointed, but chemists eventually studied the gas and realized that natural gas deposits in the United States often contain helium in single-digit percentages. As it turned out, the Great Plains was hiding enormous amounts of helium, and the United States quickly became, and remains today, the world?s biggest supplier of helium. Many uses were found for the gas?in particular, lighter-than-air travel. In 1925, the United States created the National Helium Reserve to ensure our dominance in the zeppelin wars that were sure to come. (The Hindenburg was filled with the very flammable hydrogen rather than helium because the United States controlled helium supplies and was loath to provide the gas to Germany.) In 1960, demand for helium increased, so Congress created incentives for natural gas producers to sell their helium to the helium reserve. This helium has been stored by the Bureau of Land Management in giant underground caverns in the Texas panhandle to this day.

By 1996, the BLM had a large amount of helium, but the agency was also $1.6 billion in debt. To offset that debt, the Helium Privatization Act was passed to sell the government?s reserve to private companies. Unlike the strategic petroleum reserve that is maintained for emergencies, the helium reserve was seen as a financial burden.

The solution was to sell it off as fast as possible. The price was determined by dividing the existing debt by the remaining volume of helium. It wasn?t chosen by assessing supply and demand, but was based on recouping the cost of running the BLM facility. This is analogous to digging up gold in your backyard then selling it at a price sufficient to pay for the shovel you used.

Jill Kelley's sister hires Allred to 'correct misconceptions'

Cliff Owen / AP

Natalie Khawam, accompanied by her attorney Gloria Allred, leaves a news conference in Washington, Nov. 20, 2012.

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

Attorney Gloria Allred and Natalie Khawam, the twin sister of Jill Kelley, held a press conference Tuesday to ?help the public understand? Khawam and "correct misconceptions" regarding her involvement in the scandal that led to the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus.

?Everything that is said has an impact on [Khawam?s] life, and she?s worked very, very hard to earn her position as a well-educated attorney, someone who cares about her family, and she values her reputation, and, of course, she?s hurt, as anyone would be hurt when there are mischaracterizations of what she has done, what she has said or what is going on in her life,? Allred said at the press conference in Washington, D.C. ?This is, in part, an opportunity to set the record straight.?

A friend of Petraeus, Khawam has so far only bore a tangential relationship to the scandal that forced Petraeus to resign his post about a week and a half ago.

After the FBI began an investigation, Petraeus admitted an extra-marital affair in his resignation letter from the CIA.?He is believed to have conducted that affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Khawam is the twin sister of Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, who received ?alarming? emails from an anonymous source, according to a spokesperson for Kelley. The FBI investigation into those emails identified Broadwell as the sender, officials said.

?My sister Jill and I aren?t just twins, we?re best friends, literally inseparable,? Khawam said. ?During my darkest times, Jill held a light for me. She and my brother-in-law took me in when we needed refuge and protection. Jill is the kindest, most generous person I know.?

Both Petraeus and Gen. John Allen, commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, intervened in Khawam?s custody battle in September, writing letters in support of her.

At the time, Khawam was seeking to relax a judge?s order restricting her visits with her now 4-year-old son. The judge hearing the case took issue with Khawam?s claims of domestic violence, calling them ?patently incredible? and ?obviously fabricated,? and she harshly criticized her for a ?stunning willingness to say anything, even under oath, to advance her own interests.?

Holly Petraeus previously signed an affidavit also in support of Khawam, according to the lawyer for Grayson Wolfe, Khawam?s ex-husband.

Allred said Khawam's family law attorney has filed an appeal in the custody case and that the briefs in that appeal "articulate why the lower court decision should be reversed" and full child custody granted to Khawam.

?I contacted Gloria Allred in order to assist me and help guide me through what is a very difficult time for me and my family,? Khawam said. ?I look forward to the day when I?m able to answer everyone?s question and explain what really happened in this matter.?

Grilled Mackerel Scad (Galunggong) with a singed Caprese salad

AT THE GRILL WITH THE FAT KID INSIDE

Photobucket

Living in an apartment, one of the things I miss the most is being to cook outdoors. I guess I could give it a whirl and light up my grill on the balcony but I?m not sure I?d want to deal with the upstairs neighbour (whom I?ve never met but who I?m pretty sure is a 200 pound brute given the thump noises every morning ? could be something else but I don?t want to give it too much thought). I?m not sure if it?s the smell of the garden, the invitation of the heat, the extra flavours that an overused grill and burning wood lends to a dish or simply the freedom of space that?s attractive to me. Maybe it?s wired in our genes for us to enjoy seeing real fire lick fresh produce. A primal pleasure of sorts.

With my recent collaboration with Seabiscuit Films (seabiscuitfilms.com), a trio of 3 filmmakers, I was excited to do an outdoors shoot, because if I ever do have a cooking show, I would want most videos to be shot in an outdoors kitchen with all the geeky trimmings (brick oven, smoker, grill, open flame pits, gas stove tops..). This 1st outdoor video (out of 3) was directed by Sarie Cruz (sariecruz.com) and she got the help of Carina Santos (carina-santos.com) for some really clean graphics. The song you hear in the background is from a Filipino artist called Some Gorgeous Accident (numberlinerecords.com). It makes me happy to only have local content in these videos.

I just wanted to make a humble recipe that uses everyday ingredients and bring in just a little charm that only a grill could provide.

Grilled Mackerel Scad (Galunggong) with a singed Mozzarella Buffala salad

?

?

Take 2 mackerels and marinate with some lemon juice, 2 crushed garlic cloves, a tbsp of lemon rind, chopped rosemary, rock salt and pepper. Let stand for about 5mins. Grill at low heat until just cooked (about 4mins each side)

For the Salad, take 1 large red tomato, make light slits in the skin with a sharp knife, bathe in olive oil and grill on the same grill/same heat, don?t let flames touch the tomato. Take 2 large sweet red chilli pepper and do the same thing. Once nice and soft, cut through it and layer with torn mozzarella buffala and the chopped chilli; serve with the fish, lemon juice, salt and pepper and some chopped fresh flat parsley.

Big funeral for India's Hindu extremist leader

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? Hundreds of thousands of grieving supporters thronged the streets of Mumbai on Sunday for the funeral of Bal Thackeray, a Hindu extremist leader linked to waves of mob violence against Muslims and migrant workers in India.

Nearly 20,000 policemen were on hand because of the violent history of the group. The mourners, however, remained calm and orderly as the body of Thackeray was cremated at Shivaji park where he had made political debut by addressing his first public rally 46 years ago.

His son and successor, Uddhav Thackeray, lit the funeral pyre amid chants of "Thackeray is immortal" by the supporters, some of whom wept.

Top Indian politicians, industrialists and Bollywood stars including L.K. Advani, Sharad Pawar, Anil Ambani and Amitabh Bachchan, earlier placed floral wreathes aside Thackeray's body, which was wearing his trademark dark sunglasses.

Thackeray, an 86-year-old powerful, rabble-rousing orator for Shiv Sena ? which means Shiva's Army ? died on Saturday following a cardio-respiratory arrest. He had been ill for several weeks.

His body, wrapped in India's national flag, was carried through the city on a trailer-truck. Policemen carried his body to the cremation site at the end of a daylong funeral procession as the Maharashtra state government, headed by the governing Congress party, announced state funeral for him.

Life in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital came to a halt as people voluntarily closed shops and businesses and kept taxis and auto-rickshaws off the roads. However, state-run buses and trains plied to help Thackeray's supporters to attend his cremation.

Indian media reports said more than 1.5 million people attended his funeral procession. There were no official estimates of the mourners.

"Mumbai has not seen a congregation like this in the past 50 years," said Kumar Ketkar, editor of a local daily and a respected political commentator.

Thackeray's Sena is among the most xenophobic of India's Hindu right-wing political parties and held power in Mumbai from 1995 to 2000. His supporters often called him Hindu Hriday Samrat or emperor of Hindu hearts.

In 1992, members of Hindu right-wing groups, including the Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party, were instrumental in destroying a 16th century mosque in north India that they said was the birthplace of the Hindu god Rama, and Thackeray was blamed for the violence and rioting that followed. In Mumbai alone, nearly 1,000 people were killed.

His extreme regional and religious parochialism led him to advocate Hindu suicide bombers and planting bombs in Muslim neighborhoods to "protect the nation and all Hindus."

His followers often attacked and rampaged through the offices of media organizations that he claimed were anti-Maharashtrian and anti-Hindu and threatened to dig up cricket pitches ahead of matches between largely Hindu India and its Muslim-majority neighbor Pakistan.

Even though the Shiv Sena's political grip over Mumbai ? its longtime power base ? has been waning over the last decade, it still commands tens of thousands of violent followers.

In the early 1990s he led a successful campaign to drop what he called the colonially tainted name Bombay ? a Portuguese derivation of "beautiful bay" ? and replace it with Mumbai, after the local Marathi language name for a Hindu goddess. The city is the capital of Maharashtra state.
