Looking for a job is undoubtably one of the most stressful hurdles in one?s life. Whether you?re out of a job or uncomfortable in your current position, you?re looking for anything to make the hunt a little easier.
1. Job Compass
Are you hoping to cut down your morning commute with a closer office? iPhone app Job Compass [iTunes link] searches for open positions near your home, within a five-mile radius. Or if you?re willing to travel or maybe even relocate for the right job, you can search up to 100 miles away. The app searches more than 2 million listings to help find the job you?re looking for. We played with the app ? typing in ?waitress,? ?public relations? and ?engineer? to find job lists with great variety. Job Compass includes many different industries and various levels of hierarchy within those fields. It used to be a paid app, but now it?s free in the iTunes store.
2. Job Search by Indeed.com
If you?ve performed an online job search in the past couple years, it?s likely that Indeed.com sourced some of those listings. The website is very comprehensive, with thousands of listings from company websites and job boards. To put it in perspective, the site experiences 1.5 billion job searches per month.
Indeed?s app is just as useful if you?re on-the-go. Although the name is bland ? Job Search [iTunes link] ? the app has some brains. You can save and/or email your favorite job postings, and the app saves recent searches for your next visit. The app will also show you the latest jobs posted in your chosen field, since your last search. Users have complained (in the comments section of the iTunes store) that sometimes the same job listings post more than once, so be wary of that when using this free app. It?s available on iTunes and Google Play.
3. JobMo
JobMo is a free app on iTunes and Google Play. Users search among millions of job listings from around the globe. Use Google Maps to find local jobs and compare salaries for your desired jobs. Find interview tips and connect with other job seekers to share job hunting techniques. If you?re using an Android tablet or iPad, you can apply to jobs directly from the app. The app?s users tout its usefulness and simple UI.
4. Gigwalk
Employers are still slow to take on new staff in this economy, but the contract work sector has seen a boost in activity over the past few years. What better way to get your foot in a company?s door than to prove your qualifications?
The Gigwalk app is available on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. You can find temporary gigs ranging in pay from $6 to several hundred. When you do well, businesses with profiles on Gigwalk can invite you to private groups, thus broadcasting your name to others in the company. If you?re hired for a Gigwalk project, employers can write reviews of your work that will live on the app, potentially enhancing your appeal to other employers.
Sure, you could sit at home and apply for jobs all day, but these job search apps let you take your search with you wherever you go. Do you think job search apps are helpful when looking for a new gig? Tell us in the comments.
